Wow, what a crazy weekend. It started off a little slow on Friday with another marathon of episodes of The Office (only 1 more disc to go until we’re caught up!), but turned into a hectic few days. Saturday night we went to the Will Hoge show at The Double Door in Chicago. Usually we end up going by ourselves, but amazingly we ended up with a decent sized crowd that included Beth’s friends Carolyn and Brent and Brent’s girlfriend Sara. It was a slow and miserable ride down there in the rain and we didn’t find a parking spot that was exactly close, but we got into the place about 20 minutes before show time. There were two opening acts, Dearborn and then Elliot Morris, which didn’t interest us much since we’d seen Dearborn open for Virginia Coalition earlier in the year and they weren’t too impressive then. I ran into Tracey, an old friend of mine from my concert binging in college and my friend Erum and a few of her friends met up with us as well so we had a good size group by the time Will Hoge was starting.
The past few times we’ve seen Will Hoge it’s been an all-ages show at Park West so he has to finish up by 11 PM, but this was finally a 21+ over where he could play as long as he wanted and he took full advantage of it. He did mention that he was surprised at how many people came out since he thought they attracted a younger crowd in Chicago. They usually have a setlist posted on their website, but it’s not up yet so I can’t verify how long they played, but I kind of feel like it was at least 2 hours, maybe 2.5, but either way making it the longest show I’ve seen from him. I’ll post the setlist later, but there were a few songs that stood out to me especially King of Grey. I tend to skip over it on the album, but this version was very extended and had a lot more intensity than usual. Opening with The Man Who Killed Love is always a good start, and he played a new tune called Silver and Gold for us too. During Pocket Full of Change everyone (including the drummer) came to the front of the stage to sing the The man in Hollywood says that we ain’t any good / He won’t give us any money cause we play and talk funny lines.
During Woman Be Strong someone (one of Brent’s friends that was at the show as well) proposed to his girlfriend. They were Will Hoge superfans to say the least.
It really was the best show I’ve seen from Mr. Hoge. Brent, Sara and Carolyn had never heard of him before the show, but they were all stunned with how awesome he was. I’m glad they ended up enjoying the show and hopefully they tell a few more people about him. I say it every time, but he deserves a lot more success than he’s had.
I’m kicking myself for not bringing my taping gear and recording the show, but hopefully he’ll be back in Chicago soon. He did mention there will be a new album coming out in ‘07, so there’s something to look forward to.

You glossed over the opening bands but failed to mention an important fact. The act that came on after crappy Dearborn was Elliot Morris. Although we were chatting and seated with a blocked view of the stage, we all stopped to nod our heads. I can’t go into much greater detail, but I know that I myself am looking forward to checking him out some more. If we’re lucky, he’ll play with Will Hoge again next time he’s in town.
