On Saturday, September 16th, I participated in the Chicago Memory Walk, a 3.2 mile walk that raises money for the Alzheimer’s Association. The walk is held in Chicago along Montrose beach. I participated in this walk previously in 2004 with my mom, her sister (and my aunt) Cindy, as well as my cousins Laura and Melissa. Although I was unable to walk last year, I was happy to partake again this year.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the disease, there are currently 4.5 million Americans diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, and by 2050 the number of individuals with Alzheimer’s could total 16 million. Simply stated, the disease is a brain disorder that affects a person’s memory as well as their basic ability to reason and live a normal life. For more detailed information on the effects of Alzheimer’s, I refer you to the Alzheimer’s Association’s webpage.

I participate in this walk in memory of my maternal grandmother Betty, who died afflicted with this disease. The Memory Walk is an awesome way to commemorate her life, spend time with my family and raise funds to battle the disease that affects so many. This year, our walking group grew as Laura’s fiancé Joe joined us along with friends of Melissa’s from work. Cheering us on at the finish line were my Uncle Phil, Rob (Melissa’s husband) and Bob (my step-dad). We were also lucky to have great weather this year. Although it was a chilly morning, the sun came out to warm us up as we walked.

So far, the 2006 Memory Walk has raised over $663,000! If you are interested in donating, please do so here. You may also contact me if you are interested in joining our team for the 2007 Memory Walk. Thank you to everyone who made donations to me and my teammates. We had a fantastic time and walked for an even more fantastic cause!
