Shine

The Australian rockers Jet will be releasing their sophomore album October 3rd and it’s certainly no slump. The success of Get Born in 2003 wasn’t a fluke and 2006’s Shine On proves that by being a gritty rock n’ roll album. There aren’t many bands on the radio these days that still have roots in the classic rock n’ roll sound, but Jet is one of the few drawing strong on influences from the Beatles, AC/DC and the Rolling Stones. Coupled with the fact Nic and Chris Cester are a powerful songwriting duo sharing both writing and vocal duties makes Jet and Shine On something to listen to these days. The album’s lead single Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is sounds uncharacteristically Jet until the chorus and Come On, Come On is clearly influenced by the time Jet spent on tour with Oasis in 2005. Rip It Up and That’s All Lies sound as if they could have been from Get Born and Stand Up is a anthemic song that hits a new level of maturity for the band with Nic advising Walk on with your feet off the ground / How they gonna stop you now?
Nic and Chris Cester lost their father between the two albums and the title track seems to be directed at that loss. It also happens to be the best song they’ve ever written. This song should have probably been locked up and put away because of how personal it is, but thankfully the band included on this album. Nic sings with a painful longing When the days all feel the same / Don’t feel the cold or wind or rain / Everything will be ok / We will meet again one day / And I will shine on for everyone.
There aren’t many negative things to say about this album. It’s solid from front to back and is Jet’s strongest effort to date which says a lot because Get Born was a phenomonal record in itself. The only bad part of this album is that it took 3 years to get here.
