Slight Right

Welcome!

Hey everyone, welcome to Slight Right…. a new blog which is going to be shared between myself and Beth. Hopefully this blog will be about stuff related to us and what we do, but until I get Confused Amused back up and running, you’re going to have to suffer through my nerd-ery. The current plan with CA is to have it be more a portfolio/professional web design blog and not clutter it with my ramblings about vacations, music and anything else. So everything that’s not super-nerd related will be Slight Right, well at some point. Like I said, you’ll suffer through it here for awhile.

I’ll be posting our entries from our Seattle/Portland trip in just a little bit, but here’s some info to aquaint yourself with the site in the meantime. Most of the stuff is pretty self-explanatory, but I’m going to highlight a few of the more unique items on the site.

  • Concerts: This actually pulls its data from a Concerts calendar that I’ve created in Google Calendar. Every 2 hours it checks in to see if anything has been updated and then displays the next 3 concerts coming up. If you’d like the address to the full calendar let me know and I’ll get that to you.
  • Cork’d: Cork’d is a fairly new website devoted to wine tasting and sharing and if you haven’t yet, I would highly recommend signing up. Cork’d is a whole post in itself, but the Cork’d section on the footer of the page is merely a listing of the last 3 wines that I’ve tasted and added to my wine journal.
  • Sidenotes: Sidenotes are what should hopefully keep this blog active. It’s a real pain sometimes to find the time to write a decent article or post about a topic even though I’d love to mention a topic and see what people think. Voila - sidenotes happen. They will not show up as a post on the main page of the site, but they will appear in your RSS feeds and in the archives section. I think I first saw this idea at Dan Cederholm’s Simplebits site a long time ago although I doubt he was the first one to do it.
  • Tunes: Being musically curious myself, I always like to see what other people are listening to. I’ll try to keep this updated fairly regularly. For the Wordpress geeks out there, does anyone have a decent way of doing this automatically? I tried various plugins for Last.fm, but was unsuccessful finding one that worked consistently and was able to display the album art.
  • Flickr: Last 9 photos I’ve added to the best freakin’ photo site ever. I can’t believe people think Facebook is a valid alternative.

I think that sums up a lot of the basic stuff. A few other things I wanted to mention was that for an optimal browsing experience at this site (and anywhere else on the web!) please do the following:

  • Use Firefox: For the love of god, visit Mozilla.com and download Firefox if you’re using Windows. You Mac people can ignore that statement and continue using the lovely Safari or Camino if you’re a diehard Mozilla fan. Firefox for the Mac is fugly and slow. Now be happy you ditched Internet Explorer, that slow, buggy insecure P.O.S. that Microsoft created.
  • Turn on Clear Type: Why this isn’t enabled by default on Windows XP is a mystery. Once again you Mac users can ignore this one, but if you’re using XP, chances are you never activated Clear Type, which smooths out fonts in web browsing to make them more aethestically pleasing. You can visit Microsoft’s ClearType page to see what the difference is and then activate it.

That seems to be a good start for now. Thanks for stopping by and hopefully you’ll continue reading and commenting on what goes on here.
